Application of mass spectrometry to the characterization of polymers

چکیده
Recent advances in soft ionization techniques for mass spectrometry of polymeric materials make it possible to determine the mass of intact molecular ions exceeding 1 x 1 OS Da. Developments in high resolution mass spectrometers have additionally led to impressive advances in our ability to characterize polymers. The entire molecular mass distribution of a polymer sample can be accurately measured. From the molecular mass, the molecular formulae and information regarding polymer composition and end-groups can be deduced. The two techniques which have received the most attention are matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization and electrospray ionization. In recent work, these techniques have been combined with chromatographic separations, and a series of mass spectra are acquired for each fraction of the distribution. This simplifies the analysis by reducing the number of components present in each mass spectrum, and additionally improves quantitation.

Application Note ET-35 ESI and MALDI Tandem Mass Spectrometry of Poly(ethylene imine)s: A Comparison Study for Structural Characterization
ESI-Q-TOF and MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometers were utilized to elucidate the macromolecular structures of linear poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) polymers, which are of importance in gene delivery. A detailed characterization of linear PEIs was performed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). This study provides important information with regard to the fragmentation mechanism of PEI polymers and the c...
متن کاملDevelopment and Application of a Validated Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Method for the Determination of Dexchlorpheniramine Maleate in Human Plasma
A convenient liquid chromatographic-single Quadrupole mass spectrometric (LC-MS) method was developed and validated for dexchlorpheniramine maleate (INN name: chlorphenamine) determination in human plasma. The need for just a single liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl acetate and being highly sensitive were the advantages of this method. The linearity was also excellent over the range of 1...
متن کاملStructural Characterization of Polymers by MALDI Spiral-TOF Mass Spectrometry Combined with Kendrick Mass Defect Analysis
High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) continues to play an important role in the compositional characterization of larger organic molecules. In the field of polymer characterization, however, the application of HRMS has made only slow progress because of lower compatibility between matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron re...
متن کاملProteome analysis of Cryptosporidium parvum and C. hominis using two-dimentional electrophoresis, image analysis and tandem mass spectrometry
Until recently, Cryptosporidium was thought to be a single species genus. Molecular studies now showthat there are at least 10 valid species of this parasite. Among them, two morphologically identical species, C.hominis and C. parvum are the most pathogenic identified to date and share 97% of identical genomes.Post-genomic analyses is therefore necessary to explore further the...
